Nina Foch delivers a serviceable performance in this unremarkable drama. She portrays “Celeste,” a gypsy princess, and it’s quickly revealed that she has an unusual appetite! The film's shortcomings stem from its creative choices; employing an actual animal instead of a person in costume diminishes the impact. It seems likely that someone like Rudd Weatherwax was directing events from behind the scenes. Consequently, the narrative feels predictable. While the cinematography creates an unsettling atmosphere, it’s possible this resulted more from financial constraints than artistic design. The film clocks in at just over an hour and possesses a few positive aspects—notably, some inventive use of darkness and Barton McLane's dependable portrayal of the detective "Lane"—but generally fails to generate much suspense and blends easily with numerous other films produced during the war years.
