Peter McGinn on The Fattest Man in Britain

7/10 · Sep 26, 2020

Based solely on a synopsis, I likely would have skipped this film. However, I'm pleased I decided to watch it, even with its oddities. A significant reason for my enjoyment is Timothy Spall, who occasionally manages to surprise me with his range, and the unexpected but convincing connection that forms between his character, Britain’s Fattest Man, and the young pregnant Amy. While I felt some sadness for the central figure, it's largely an uplifting story about someone who shouldn't realistically be so positive. The tourists he meets occasionally feel exaggerated, but given how the pandemic has revealed people’s extreme actions, perhaps I should refrain from questioning their realism. The narrative moves forward with a solid group of performers and there is some growth for certain characters, though not across the board. Regarding the conclusion—I won't spoil it, but because this is ultimately an uplifting movie, you can be confident that it will leave you feeling reasonably good.
