The author’s interest in the mysterious and supernatural is prominent once more in this absorbing addition to the "Charlie Chan" movies. The story begins with an ocean liner disaster and what appears to be the death of wealthy man “Allan Colby.” The detective, known for his doubts, isn't certain about it and goes to San Francisco to look into things. He was correct to have reservations—though only briefly—as the affluent gentleman is then stabbed before he can clarify events, which initiates a search for his killer. As anticipated, there are numerous people of interest when he gets to the deceased’s estate, and the psychic "Carlotta" (Gloria Roy) does a good job of agitating everyone. The film has visual appeal, showcasing affluent Californian style alongside an economical screenplay and a steadily building story. Herbert Mundin's performance as the somewhat timid butler is overdone, and the absence of “Jimmy” to contrast his father’s serious nature slightly diminishes it; nevertheless, it remains a skillfully constructed tale with a satisfying ending and some notably strong performances from those in supporting roles.
