John Chard on Hit the Ice

6/10 · Sep 18, 2014

It’s not exactly Universal Studios trying to squeeze every last drop out of a tired idea… …though it comes pretty close. Still, there's enough enjoyment to be had and the film looks good, if only the script matched that level of quality! I find with Abbott & Costello films, it helps to revisit them after some time has passed, so you can appreciate them without feeling like you’ve already seen everything before. This one involves the duo as photographers who accidentally become entangled in a bank robbery and must escape to a ski resort to try and clear their names. The familiar slapstick is present, with Tubby repeatedly losing his trousers, experiencing an unfortunate incident involving fire, skiing alongside a bear, and attempting to impress a woman by pretending he can play the piano. The music is provided by Ginny Simms and the Johnny Long Orchestra, while Patric Knowles, Elyse Knox, and Sheldon Leonard, as the main bad guy, deliver solid performances in supporting roles. It doesn’t rank among their best films, but it's definitely better than average and offers a reminder of what made them so unique back then. 6/10
