I recall seeing this film in a movie theater with a friend during our first year of college. We’d come back to town, and since we lived somewhere remote, going to the cinema felt like an automatic choice because there wasn't much else available. To be truthful, I was pretty impressed when I left the theater initially; it was unlike anything I’d experienced up until that point. The only film that came close would be American Beauty, which we had watched a short time before, but even that one had more of a discernible storyline. I have to say, at first, I thought it was quite good...but then I revisited it and now my opinion has changed; I simply consider it pretentious. That’s the perfect word for it, really. The initial impression is powerful because it's an unusual film you haven’t encountered before. But upon a second viewing, with more awareness of what it was trying to do, you notice that the plot, the characters, and even the entire concept are as flimsy and obvious as a delicate white shirt soaked through. The visual style was present, but that's all there really was. It’s essentially a display piece, superficial and empty. It’s like someone is showing off with no real substance underneath, hoping the audience will be distracted enough by the visuals to overlook the lack of depth.
