This film feels like a scaled-down version of Jurassic Park. The scope is smaller; it’s noticeably shorter and the storyline focuses on a few characters searching for a child within a dangerous, untamed animal enclosure. They managed to get Sam Neil to return, along with Laura Dern to some degree, but the movie seems affected by the absence of Jeff Goldblum's Ian Malcolm. The writing almost acknowledges this, as Alan Grant occasionally repeats Ian’s lines and explanations. I also feel that William H. Macy’s abilities weren’t fully utilized in his part. Despite that, it is an enjoyable movie, including those predictable but pleasant scenes showcasing large dinosaur herds and some lighter moments. I wasn't keen on the raptors being portrayed as intelligent beings capable of outsmarting humans if not for the asteroid event; that seemed a bit much. A particularly good scene occurred when Alan noticed the bridge they were using was actually part of an aviary for pterodactyls.
