It makes me curious if Elizabeth Taylor may have seen this film before accepting a similar part a year later, because I doubt she’d have benefited much from what’s presented here—a rather stiff portrayal of this fascinating historical figure. The difficulties of co-ruling with her brother, "Ptolemy," played with energy by Corrado Pani, become too great, and so the plotting Theodotus (Ennio Balbo) decides to try for a change in power. This pushes our main character and her guardian Apollodorus (Franco Volpi) into hasty measures that land her among Pompeii (Akim Tamiroff), who also has his own plans to get around Caesar (Gordon Scott). If the performances were more believable and of higher quality, this wouldn't be so disappointing. The film’s visual elements are well done; the sets and costumes work effectively, and the fight sequences are enjoyable. However, Petit’s performance and that of the even less animated "Lucius" (Rik Battaglia) quickly drain any enjoyment or spark from the story. One doesn't anticipate brilliant writing, but a bit more care with the script could have made a significant improvement. Despite all this, I did find myself enjoying it, and I appreciate this type of movie. If you feel similarly, then it’s probably worth checking out.
