Peter McGinn on Unforgiven

10/10 · Sep 20, 2020

Clint Eastwood's film ranks among my top three westerns—those I gladly rewatch whenever possible. The other two are *Once Upon a Time in the West* and *The Good, the Bad and the Ugly*. While all three possess a certain roughness, they aren’t striving for strict realism. It's unlikely that gun battles with one person defeating several opponents were common occurrences in the Old West. However, if we witnessed a shootout where characters were consistently missing their shots, that would strike us as unbelievable—that's just part of movie-making. Eastwood portrays an ex-villain who is now someone to support, while Gene Hackman embodies a lawman whose harshness makes him easily dislikeable. The writing is superb; for example, Bill Munny’s comments after he shoots a saloon owner stand out. There's also the characteristic humor found in Eastwood's films, particularly related to Schofield's boasting. I could continue praising it extensively, but perhaps you are fortunate enough to have yet to experience this film.
