Wuchak on No Bad Days

4/10 · Jun 10, 2020

_**Low-budget adventure film set on the Yucatan Peninsula**_ A woman (Heather Storm), whose brother is an archeologist who disappeared, travels to the Yucatan Peninsula searching for him. There she meets a local man (Protasio) with secrets of his own. It turns out that some ruthless treasure hunters are involved in the disappearance of three excavators. Michael Madsen appears as the leader of this group, while Keith David has a brief role. Richard Tyson is also present as part of the archeological team. The film initially known as “No Bad Days” (2008) was later renamed "Lost Treasure of the Maya." It’s an independently produced movie made with very little money that borrows from films like “King Solomon’s Mines” (1985) and “Into the Blue 2: The Reef” (2009), though it isn't as over-the-top silly as the first or as serious as the second. The small budget definitely holds it back from being nearly as enjoyable as those other treasure-hunting films. It seems like this is a project driven by Protasio, who co-wrote the screenplay with director David Murphy. He’s a likable lead character and his physique is motivating (in terms of wanting to improve your own fitness). Storm does well in her part as an exasperating but amusing attractive woman. I was struck by how beautiful the Yucatan locations are—the ocean, beaches, jungles, etc.—and especially the realistic caves and natural pools, which were lit very effectively. The music is also noteworthy. The director/writer demonstrates skill in almost every area except for the writing of dialogue, particularly when it comes to sound and working with actors who aren’t as experienced. If you can overlook that obvious problem and like small-budget independent films, there are a few enjoyable aspects to be found. The film has a running time of 1 hour, 38 minutes and was filmed in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. GRADE: C-/C
