Wuchak on Blackwater

5/10 · Nov 17, 2022

This movie is a small-scale adaptation of “Deliverance,” but with female leads. The story follows four women in their late twenties who take a vacation to the Everglades, engaging in activities like ATV riding, hiking, camping, and canoeing. Their trip takes a dark turn when they encounter three dangerous men living in the swamp. "Blackwater” (2007) is exactly as described—a blend of “Deliverance” (1972) and “I Spit on Your Grave” (1978), unfolding within the southern Florida wetlands. You really need to be into low-budget independent films to get a kick out of it. The performances aren't great, but the film’s visuals are impressive and the soundtrack is pretty good. If you’re interested in seeing the natural beauty of the Everglades and its wildlife, this movie offers that. It’s comparable to “Piranha” (1972), starring William Smith, which serves as a tour of Venezuela. The four women—two blondes, a brunette, and a redhead—seem older than the typical college crowd, making them feel more developed and less like stereotypical party girls. They’re all attractive, though they could probably use a few extra pounds to give them some more shape. I personally found the redhead, Kat (McCayne Blomberg), the most appealing, but brunette Angie (Georgia Chris) is also compelling as the enthusiastic one of the group. The three villains are appropriately cast and look like they belong in that environment. However, “Blackwater” doesn’t have the same substance as "Deliverance." The story could have used more development. Nevertheless, if you're okay with very low-budget movies, it does have some good moments. The film is 1 hour and 22 minutes long and was filmed at Devil's Garden in southern Florida. GRADE: C
