Initially, it seems like a predictable movie built around a famous actor, centering on a wandering protagonist. However, it proves to be considerably more engaging than that premise suggests. Gary Cooper portrays "Tony," a writer experiencing difficulty finding publication opportunities. Facing financial strain, he, his wife, "Dora" (Helen Vinson), and their patient handyman, "Taka" (Otto Yamaoka), move to his Connecticut farm seeking creative renewal. Upon arrival, they sell land to Polish tobacco farmers; with the resulting money, Dora returns to New York, leaving Tony and Taka behind. Cooper develops a connection with "Manya Novak" (Anna Sten), the daughter of a couple about to marry, and after some initial hesitations, she becomes a source of inspiration for his writing. When Taka decides he’s had enough of the cold weather and leaves, Manya begins assisting Tony. From there, the plot unfolds in a fairly predictable manner. The script occasionally offers clever lines, but it's perhaps most significant for its subtle critiques of various biases, particularly those held by the Polish families regarding marriage, women, and property ownership. There’s an undeniable spark between Cooper and Sten, who portrays a quietly charming character, and Walter Brennan adds some welcome humor with his infrequent appearances; all things considered, this is a romantic comedy that surpasses typical expectations.
