I think this film is one that really should be rated better online. It’s fair to consider it a black-and-white version of North By Northwest, as the themes are quite similar, making it something like a precursor to that wonderful movie. The story is straightforward: an innocent man finds himself fleeing while trying to uncover who's responsible for a fire that took his best friend’s life. During his flight, he encounters various memorable characters in the style of Hitchcock—spies, circus performers, and, naturally, a captivating woman played by Pricilla Lane. There’s plenty of suspense to identify it as a film from a master director; a particularly gripping scene shows Barry Kane struggling with his handcuffs beside the road, and the finale at the Statue of Liberty is fantastic, resulting in a very well-crafted thriller that I'd give an 8/10. It’s interesting to know that Hitchcock initially envisioned Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck as the leads; while that would have been amazing, Lane and Robert Cummings did perfectly well in their roles.
