CinemaSerf on Samson and Delilah

It's been three and a half decades since Victor Mature first appeared as the leading man, and he makes a cameo appearance here playing his own father, Manoah, in this retelling of the biblical tale about an extraordinarily powerful individual (Antony Hamilton) who must guide his people out of Egypt and then finds himself drawn to the alluring Delilah (Belinda Bauer). She is a Philistine determined to assist her governor, Sidka (played with considerable theatricality by Max von Sydow), and the wicked high priest Dagon (Jose Ferrer) in either controlling or eliminating his ability to slay lions. The events that follow deviate considerably from the story found in Judges but still offer a well-made version, paying some attention to the visual aspects of the film. It feels somewhat long and, despite the recognizable names featured, lacks the appeal of the 1949 de Mille production; it’s genuinely hard to determine who this remake was intended for. The final portion of the movie perks things up a bit, but ultimately just highlighted what Hollywood could achieve at its finest when utilizing Technicolor.
