Wuchak on Jesse James Meets Frankenstein's Daughter

5/10 · Apr 15, 2021

_**A companion piece to “Billy the Kid Versus Dracula”**_ Dr. Maria Frankenstein (Narda Onyx) picks up where her grandfather left off, conducting her unsettling research at a monastery located in the Southwest. Jesse James (John Lupton), still engaged in his life of crime, finds himself needing to seek medical assistance for an injured member of his gang (Cal Bolder) at this very location—a decision he’ll quickly regret. Estelita Rodriguez appears as the gypsy girl, and Jim Davis portrays the marshal. "Jesse James Meets Frankenstein's Daughter" (1966) shares a history with "Billy the Kid Versus Dracula," having been filmed consecutively by directors/writers William Beaudine & Carl Hittleman. Both films approach their concepts in a straightforward manner—imagining what would occur if Dr. Frankenstein were real and his granddaughter continued his disturbing work somewhere like the American Southwest, and supposing that Jesse James hadn't met his end prematurely but relocated to the Southwest where he encountered Ms. Frankenstein. The film’s quality is noticeable; “Lady Frankenstein” (1971) clearly drew inspiration from it, as did "Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell" (1974). However, this one doesn't quite live up to its predecessor, and there are moments that elicit unintended laughter. Despite that, it’s still a film worth seeing if you don’t mind the unusual combination of genres. The presence of Narda Onyx and Estelita Rodriguez is certainly a plus. The movie has a running time of approximately 1 hour, 25 minutes, and was filmed at Ray Corrigan Ranch in Simi Valley, California, as well as at Paramount Studios in Hollywood. GRADE: C
