Filipe Manuel Neto on The Treasure of the Sierra Madre

8/10 · Oct 28, 2023

This movie stands out as a truly worthwhile piece of cinema, still relevant decades after its release. It’s striking to observe a film depicting Americans encountering hardships—hunger, joblessness, the struggle for survival—in Mexico, mirroring experiences many Mexicans face in the United States today. The story opens with three Americans lacking opportunities and deciding to gamble everything on a treasure-seeking venture, becoming gold prospectors deep within the Mexican mountains. The narrative follows these men as they confront various challenges, exposing their darker sides due to the lure of gold—a kind of avarice that consumes those pursuing rapid wealth through mining precious metals. It’s undeniable that this is a strong film, and it handles its characters with sensitivity, showing each undergoing an intriguing psychological and moral transformation. This might even be considered among Humphrey Bogart's finest performances, given how committed he was to the project. Tim Holt delivers as well, though his character’s journey differs. Walter Huston also contributes effectively. The film is definitely worth seeing: the plot is engaging, John Huston’s direction is skillful and impactful, the black-and-white photography is lovely and refined, the settings are well-crafted, and the costumes are excellent too. The movie received three Academy Awards in 1949—Best Director, Best Supporting Actor (for Walter Huston), and Best Screenplay.
