I was looking for something truly memorable to mark my 5,000th film viewed (at least according to my recollection and IMDb records), and following considerable deliberation, I chose a viewing of a well-regarded film connected with Bogart’s work alongside John Huston. The timing ended up being later than anticipated because I purchased the Humphrey Bogart Collection—a set containing 24 films on 12 double-sided DVDs—but it mistakenly included the special features disc instead, which featured very good documentaries about both John Huston and the film's production. Consequently, I held off until recently when I located the Blu-ray at a reasonable price and decided to watch it. It was definitely worth waiting for. It’s the definitive story of base avarice. Without giving away any plot points, things played out exactly as they should have for all involved. My only minor disappointment is that following a terrific appearance by the director—who I will always remember fondly when considering his acting career, especially in relation to 'Chinatown'—I wished there had been more of his character. Seeing him play a larger role would have been even better. It’s my hope that I’ll reach another 5,000 films viewed, and I am very interested to see which film I select for *that* milestone.
