Wuchak on Cut and Run

6/10 · Oct 13, 2025

This movie, filmed during the summer of '84, came from the same director who made “Cannibal Holocaust” five years before. Initially, Wes Craven was involved with the project when it was called "Marimba," but he ultimately had no creative input or writing credit. The only connection to his early involvement might be Michael Berryman’s unusual appearance; he also starred in Craven's “The Hills Have Eyes.” There isn’t much to laugh about, unlike a film like “Blind Fury,” which shares some parallels. Instead, it presents a grim and brutal jungle story centered on the dangers faced by reporters and their crew, along with issues of illegal drug trafficking and related conflicts. There’s also an unexpected link to the Jonestown tragedy that occurred on November 18, 1978, in Guyana, which is close to Venezuela's border. The scenery is remarkable, featuring many shots of the flat-topped mountains of Venezuela called Tepuis, along with jungle rivers and waterfalls. It’s a good showcase for Lisa Blount as the main character. Those unfamiliar with her work might remember her as the blonde girlfriend of David Keith’s character in “An Officer and a Gentleman,” which was released three years prior. Valentina Forte, playing Ana, is another female cast member; the director seemed to enjoy focusing the camera on her. The film draws inspiration from "Apocalypse Now," incorporating elements like jungle violence, helicopters, dancers, beheadings, and strange people living in the wilderness. However, it doesn’t capture that movie's somber atmosphere or have well-developed characters and conversations—things that require more time and effort than this production had. Nevertheless, as a straightforward adventure film set in the jungle, it succeeds. The running time is 1 hour and 26 minutes, and filming took place in Venezuela and Miami. GRADE: B-
