GenerationofSwine on Frankenstein Unbound

Growing up, we had HBO and cable in the basement—and kids really like basements. Time seems to disappear down there; it’s just another world entirely. With HBO and being able to wander around unsupervised, you could easily stay up late watching some truly enjoyable low-quality shows. And this is genuinely great stuff of that kind. It's a Roger Corman film, after all, and those are known for being inexpensive movies that are surprisingly fun. They’re better than Troma films, which often seem to lack any real skill behind them. But this one—it was 1990, and it featured John Hurt, Raul Julia, Bridget Fonda, and Jason Patrick, which already felt like a stretch for what could be considered a Corman production. Those are actors you’d want to have in anything. It looked pretty good too, alright, it had that early-90s B-movie aesthetic, but there are definitely films that look far worse than this one. The story reimagined Frankenstein as science fiction rather than horror, incorporating black holes and all sorts of things, which is interesting in itself. When the script was originally conceived, it hovered somewhere between those genres, and *Frankenstein Unbound* manages to capture that balance fairly well. It’s both a traditional Frankenstein tale and an alternate reality, post-apocalyptic version of the story, with a plot wild enough to keep you engaged even if it seems ridiculous just describing it. Honestly, in 1990, it deserved more attention than just stumbling across it late on a Saturday night while USA's *Up All Night* was showing something truly awful. It should have had a better slot, because it’s good enough to handle that kind of exposure.
