CinemaSerf on The Case of the Frightened Lady

6/10 · Jun 23, 2022

The inquiry begins when the driver of "Lady Lebanon" (Helen Haye) turns up dead, having been choked with one of her costly silk scarves; Scotland Yard detective "Tanner" (George Merritt) and his somewhat clumsy partner "Totty" (Ronald Shiner) are then called to her estate. It doesn't take much time before a number of people emerge as possible perpetrators in the death of this unpleasant man, including regular guest "Dr. Amersham" (Felix Aylmer) and her son, the current "Lord Lebanon" (Marius Goring), who she’s pushing toward marriage with "Isla" (Penelope Dudley-Ward). The mystery itself is fairly skillfully constructed, with Aylmer and Haye collaborating effectively alongside Goring to generate a subtle sense of threat as the rather underdeveloped plot moves towards an unusual resolution. The film gains from being set in a grand manor house, there's a noteworthy performance from Goring later on, and some appealing vintage automobiles are featured. Despite its deliberate pacing, it’s still something you might enjoy seeing.
