Wuchak on The Munsters' Revenge

7/10 · May 28, 2025

The follow-up to the initial film, arriving fifteen years later, finds Herman and Grandpa being arrested in Los Angeles; their alleged offenses confirmed by multiple people who witnessed them. The trouble stems from a wax museum owner, portrayed by Sid Caesar. “The Munsters’ Revenge” (1981) marks the second and last Munster movie to include Fred Gwynne, Al Lewis, and Yvonne De Carlo. Because the original actor had aged considerably, Eddie's role is filled by an impersonator. Simultaneously, Marilyn is played by Jo McDonnell, the third actress to take on the part, and she’s arguably the strongest performer in the role so far (I haven’t viewed the two Munsters movies from 1995 and 1996). Marilyn has a more substantial role this time around, and Jo's performance stands out. At one point, she even poses as the wax museum’s cave girl, played by Rachel Sorteberg. Other enjoyable moments include Herman accidentally demolishing a police station, what occurs with Igor when he and Grandpa return to the latter’s former home in Transylvania, and the fate of the Pharaoh's mummy at the conclusion. There’s also a new character, Cousin Phantom (of the Opera). Like the television show and the first movie, “Munster, Go Home!,” it’s the appeal of Gwynne & Lewis and their relationship that makes anything they are in enjoyable and heartwarming. I prefer this film compared to the original because there appear to be more amusing incidents. On a related note, don't overlook Rob Zombie's underappreciated 2022 origin story, which I greatly enjoyed. The movie has a running time of 1 hour, 36 minutes and was filmed at Universal Studios in the Los Angeles area. GRADE: B
