This documentary offers an interesting perspective on Gettysburg, distinguishing itself from other programs concerning the Civil War. It examines several key elements. Initially, it gives a brief overview of the events that unfolded in the months preceding the battle. Then, it explores how Lincoln utilized the telegraph—a relatively new technology at the time—to communicate with his generals in a way previously unheard of during wartime; an oddity given that Confederate forces would soon sever that very line before the fighting began. Lastly, the film delves into the creation and impact of the Gettysburg Address itself. The narration is provided by David Strathairn, whose acting background includes notable roles such as Edward R. Murrow in *Good Night and Good Luck*, a performance in *Passion Fish*, and even Secretary of State William H. Seward in the movie *Lincoln*. Like many documentaries since Ken Burns’s work, it also incorporates commentary from several historians and authors to help clarify matters. One of these is Jeff Shaara, son of Michael Shaara, author of *Killer Angels*, the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel that served as inspiration for the film *Gettysburg*. Jeff Shaara himself writes historical fiction. I did notice a minor issue where occasionally multiple historians seemed to be repeating similar points, but it didn't significantly detract from my experience. Even with the numerous documentaries and books I’ve encountered about the Civil War, this one proved to be worthwhile.
