Richard Dix portrays Richard McAllan, an inventive engineer who persuades backers to fund his concept for a tunnel connecting the UK and the USA across the Atlantic. The premise alone triggered my anxieties about enclosed spaces—we’re talking roughly 4,000 miles of reinforced concrete, averaging around 11,000 feet deep. Frankly, I'd prefer to travel in an airborne vehicle at 700 mph, soaring 35,000 feet above the ground! The film then unfolds as a skillfully constructed depiction of industrial endeavor, set against a backdrop of scheming and deceit; there’s betrayal, naturally, and also the expected romantic subplots involving Madge Evans and Helen Vinson, which I felt detracted from what was otherwise an ambitious narrative. Since we don't actually possess such a tunnel, the ultimate outcome is predictable, but the story moves along at a decent speed, with echoes—at least to my mind—of Metropolis (1927). The performances aren’t particularly memorable, and it leans too heavily on sentimentality at times; however, Leslie Banks and C. Aubrey Smith provide some substance, and I discovered it quite captivating even after 85 years.
