The experience could have been better if I hadn’t started thinking that James Mason's character, "Smedhurst," bore a striking resemblance to Robert Donat in "Chips" from 1939. Putting that aside, it proved to be a rather captivating story about him and his wife, "Emilie" (Barbara Mullen), purchasing an older property with a past. The house had been vacant since the passing of "Miss Harkness" more than a generation earlier, leading locals to believe it might be haunted. They dismissed such notions and moved in, accompanied by the considerably younger "Annette" (Margaret Lockwood). Soon after, she developed an interest in the young "Dr. Selbie" (Dennis Price), who felt similarly, resulting in their engagement. Things seemed promising, but the house remained uneasy—something wasn't right with the young woman; she was acting strangely and irrationally, mentioning deceased individuals. Was she somehow possessed? A solution needed to be found to quiet whatever disturbances were present. It’s quite entertaining – the script has moments of cleverness, the production values are solid, and Lockwood and Mullen both deliver strong performances in this gently mysterious story from Osbert Sitwell, a name worth noting. The title isn't ideal for the film, but it’s still worth seeing.
