A doctor attempts to resolve a medical mystery by administering an experimental serum in a clandestine surgery intended to restore a woman’s looks. He soon discovers the treatment is temporary, and his patient is actually an escaped mental institution resident who forces him into trying to stop her. This horror/thriller wasn't terrible. Once it gets going, one of its better aspects is how much enjoyment can be derived from observing the effects of the surgery. Though somewhat restrained, the results work well within the narrative and provide some amusement as they depict her treatment and recovery, giving just enough indication that something isn’t right about the procedure and introducing some welcome elements to this part. From concerns about the serum drying too quickly to body temperature differences causing a negative reaction during the process, this section effectively establishes a rather gruesome foundation for the later realization that she's falling apart while continuing to enjoy her newfound freedom and lifestyle. The methods she uses to maintain her false identity, frequently resorting to shocking murders to conceal her crimes, propel the latter half along with a police investigation attempting to locate her using various pieces of evidence. This does help increase the momentum leading up to the finale, which involves a confrontation in his laboratory, culminating in a surprising resolution alongside the disturbing appearance of her disfigurement—these are among the film’s strengths. There aren't many significant flaws; however, the film stumbles due to its departure from typical storylines of that era, affecting its pacing. Introducing the plotline about her escape into the wider world and shifting focus away from his attempts to perfect the formula means there isn't much actual action for a considerable portion of the movie. This emphasis on the investigation doesn’t provide much engaging content, simply following her as she evades police custody, which ultimately leads to unnecessary stretching out of the film. It lacks a consistent rhythm and makes the movie feel longer than it is, despite not having much happening around the central plot; while this does enhance the finale through contrast with earlier scenes, for the most part, it's not a major factor. Along with the rather hasty and abrupt ending that simply cuts off the film, these are its main shortcomings. Today's Rating/PG: Violence.
