I’ve given it my best effort, but I simply can’t connect with Lloyd Bridges. While his youthful appearance and carefully styled hair attempt to compensate, they don't overcome the fact that he isn’t a convincing performer! In this film, he portrays "Tris," an individual with experience in counterfeiting who is enlisted by the US Secret Service to investigate a criminal enterprise distributing fake currency. After initially consenting to assist them, he manages to evade their control and reconnects with his girlfriend, Barbara Peyton ("Meg"), along with his former associates, where he suggests a fresh plan for financial gain. John Hoyt delivers a solid performance as the deceptive "Downey," and Richard Fleischer maintains a degree of tension during the initial thirty minutes or so; however, the film’s momentum noticeably declines, leading to a rather anticlimactic resolution set within an oddly illuminated trolley-bus hangar. In conclusion, it functions adequately as a crime noir, but the characters feel underdeveloped, and I ultimately found the entire experience fairly forgettable.
