Prior to his well-known work with actors Rathbone and Bruce on "Sherlock Holmes," Roy William Neill directed this supernatural story unfolding on an idyllic island steeped in voodoo beliefs. Dorothy Burgess portrays “Juanita,” a young woman who returns with her family to the place where she spent her early years, following the loss of her parents. Upon their arrival, they find that the inhabitants believe she is the embodiment of a deity. She rapidly becomes immersed in this new identity, which creates some marital difficulties. The narrative itself – even within its genre – feels rather unbelievable. Her complete acceptance into this new faith happens too swiftly, and the film then spends an unnecessary amount of time on the connection between her husband “Stephen” (Jack Holt) and his attractive secretary "Gail" (Fay Wray), pulling attention away from what is otherwise a genuinely unsettling and atmospheric production—though it’s certainly constrained by its stage-bound nature. The conclusion is foreseeable, but at times the events leading up to it are quite frightening; I can easily picture audiences being startled by it in 1934. It turned out to be better than I initially thought it would be, and if this kind of story appeals to you, then it’s worth watching.
