I hadn’t seen this adaptation of the classic Jules Verne tale until fairly recently. While it doesn't measure up to the James Mason film from 1959, it isn’t entirely without merit. Kenneth More portrays the explorer "Prof. Lindenbrock" – here presented as a distinguished German academic instead of Scottish (apparently some funding came from Germany) – and he leads his small group on an expedition down an Icelandic volcano for what seems like an extraordinary journey. The other performers are largely forgettable, representing a rather diverse collection of lesser-known actors; Jack Taylor’s portrayal of "Olsen" particularly struck me as sounding quite similar to Roddy McDowall. Nevertheless, the underlying narrative is solid and even less skilled filmmakers struggle to completely ruin it. The special effects – specifically the depictions of prehistoric animals – feel like something from a school assignment (even by today's standards), but they’re interspersed with some genuinely impressive footage of volcanic activity, and the film moves at a reasonable speed that allows More to maintain enough authority to make it work. It isn’t particularly memorable, nor is it truly good, but I did find myself enjoying it.
