My affection for Italian horror films, especially those created between the sixties and eighties, has led me to consider what makes them so effective – why do Italians excel at this genre? It seems that it’s because they aren't afraid to display intense feelings openly, without restraint. There's a delicate boundary between love and hate, between goodness and wickedness, which results in actions that feel uncontrollable and behavior that is surprisingly erratic. I can say from personal experience that Italians are exceptionally expressive people. The romantic elements are consistently well-done, but you inevitably have to deal with some pain, hardship, and sadness—as The Smithereens once put it, 'I get the blues before and after loving you.' When thinking about memorable horror leads, Paul Naschy stands out as both a vital asset and a crucial connection, representing Spanish cinema's best hope. He resembled a 1960s Marlon Brando – at a point when he was becoming somewhat disillusioned and heavier because suitable roles seemed nonexistent for someone with his considerable abilities – mixed with John Belushi. There’s a sense of tragedy surrounding him; he embodies the qualities of Boris Karloff and Lon Chaney Jr., portraying a monster who is powerless to stop himself, battling against his own nature. Regardless of how weak the script was (which he frequently wrote under a pseudonym), he always managed to hold your attention. It reminds me that Jean-Luc Godard once described Roger Vadim as “with it,” meaning he makes films people want to see. ‘The Fury of the Wolfman’ is similar in that regard. Director Zabalza clearly understands his audience. Every female character, without fail, is strikingly beautiful and dressed provocatively. There are whips, chains, bondage—every scenario someone even slightly interested in sexuality would find captivating. The story itself isn't important and shouldn't be taken seriously; it’s not the point at all. All the filmmakers want to provide 90 minutes of pure cinematic enjoyment that people will enjoy watching, and that's exactly what you receive here, leaving you completely content. As The Kinks famously said, 'Give the People What They Want!'
