Almostred on Toto Forever

Intense feelings can lead people to act unexpectedly. Roberto F. Canuto’s Toto Forever, a brief work that he also directed and wrote, offers a dreamy exploration of a love affair destined for trouble. While making a delivery, a young postal worker named Toto (Kylan James) finds an injured man near a pool and helps him. The man, Mark (Kjord Davis), is involved with dangerous people, and the two leave together. As they pause by the roadside, Toto stares at the attractive fugitive. He touches his hand and leans in to kiss him... only to be surprised when the gesture is returned. Toto Forever runs just 14 minutes, so we don’t learn a great deal about these characters. Toto's role echoes that of a woman in an older Western who falls for the wounded outlaw she cares for. We aren't given enough information to know if Mark is a criminal or simply someone who has gotten into something beyond their ability to handle. Toto seems like a good, wholesome young man; Mark appears more hardened but still possesses classically handsome features. Toto may have found his ideal partner, or he might be making the biggest mistake of his life by leaving with him. A short film can resemble an initial drawing for a larger artwork, and this one begins with simple sketches of the two main characters. The focus here is clearly on what the young postman would recall from his sudden experience. Despite its length, Toto Forever creates a lovely atmosphere mixed with a sense of peril. The moments that Toto and Mark share are very romantic and sensual. Without revealing how it concludes, let’s just say their meeting will stay with Toto forever, and his recollections highlight the erotic nature of it all. A large portion of the film is silent. Canuto demonstrates a talent for visual composition and makes good use of close-up shots. The faces of the lovers dominate the screen during their kisses; at times, the camera focuses solely on their lips. Mark’s face, covered in stubble, provides a striking contrast to Toto's more youthful appearance. I enjoy passionate kissing scenes between men, and this film is full of them. Toto Forever is both alluring and suspenseful. Even though it isn't expanded into a complete movie, Canuto’s short has much to offer. I am eager for the day he directs his first feature-length project.
