Ignoring the noticeable historical inaccuracies for a couple of hours, this proves to be a fairly entertaining account of Bridie Quilty, portrayed by Deborah Kerr, who spent her childhood in Ireland absorbing elaborate tales and myths about the rebellion against British rule. Upon turning twenty-one, she decides to contribute to Irish independence and travels to Dublin with the goal of joining the IRA. That doesn’t work out, but she finds herself caught up in the orbit of Raymond Huntley, played by Miller—whom she met on the train—and becomes entangled in a scheme to free someone from prison and unintentionally aids the Nazis. While working at a hotel close to the jail, she also meets British officer Baynes, portrayed by Trevor Howard. Soon, everyone is suspicious of each other, and we're taken on an adventure that includes a small amount of romance. It’s remarkable how Launder and Gilliat managed to infuse this story with enough reality—or at least believability—to maintain the plot's appeal, and Kerr delivers a solid performance as the idealistic young woman who must rapidly distinguish between fantasy and reality. There are numerous stock characters that invite mockery (which I felt was intended for humor rather than providing any profound commentary on the politics of neutral Ireland or British colonialism), and the conclusion seems satisfactory.
