The film offers little for John Stuart, existing as a fairly standard, lightly humorous mystery centered around a haunted house. His character, Brooks, investigates a spectral presence within an old monastery, one with a tendency to frighten—or inflict something more severe—upon the other residents. These individuals include wealthy fools and enamored servants, and he must act quickly to uncover who is behind all the trouble and their motives before everyone disappears. The dialogue feels excessive, and even at less than sixty minutes, there’s noticeable filler throughout. Despite this, it remains agreeable for those interested in seeing an early British thriller that utilizes a dark atmosphere and restrained lighting to tell a very slight story with a somewhat unsettling feel.
