I came across this movie while I was still in high school, working at a video store. The cover looked pretty cheap, and when I noticed the Lions Gate logo, I wondered how awful it could really be. It was truly terrible. Ron Hall seems to have some skill with martial arts, but acting and directing aren't exactly his strengths. As soon as the movie ended, I realized it was made by the same people behind 'Future War' and a bunch of early Gary Daniels movies—none of which were great, but they had that enjoyable low-budget charm. Around 2005, Lions Gate seemed to be acquiring almost every inexpensive independent film, putting attractive covers on DVDs, and releasing them in video stores every week. I ended up renting quite a few of those (it was free!), and 'Vampire Assassin' is one that has stayed with me. It’s so memorable that just a couple of months ago it randomly came to mind, and I had to search for a copy on eBay—the shipping cost more than the disc itself! The film is obviously shot on mini-DV, giving it that distinct early 2000s digital video aesthetic. The special effects are awful, the fight scenes are awkwardly choreographed, and sometimes they speed up the footage during fights, making them look like a bizarre, sped-up Benny Hill show. I recall laughing really hard when I first rented it. Now, almost ten years later, I laughed just as much. And even if you're laughing with or at it, the film manages to be entertaining. For that reason alone, it’s worth watching.
