It’s disappointing that Irving Reis didn’t make better choices when selecting the actor for the lead role; doing so might have resulted in a refined and intelligent crime story. Instead, we're left with a rather uninspired portrayal by Pat O'Brien as "George," an art critic who becomes entangled in a train accident (or perhaps not!) and a carefully constructed plot centered on art forgery after he proposed using contemporary X-ray methods to confirm the genuineness of antique paintings loaned to a museum—among them works by Gainsborough and Dürer. Fortunately, Claire Trevor as "Terry" and Herbert Marshall playing “Traybin” appear to help unravel the mystery. There are moments when it’s genuinely captivating, and the plot's complexities—along with the subtle suggestions of deceit they imply—are inventive and well-conceived. However, the film’s length is excessive, and the pacing in the center feels incredibly slow. Despite this, the sound design works well, and seeing the movie while enjoying tea and some carrot cake would be a pleasant experience.
