"Born on the Fourth of July" proves to be a film that’s both impactful and deserving of praise, offering a look at the difficult personal and family issues Ron Kovic encountered while grappling with the severe consequences of his wartime experiences and how those events altered him and reshaped his worldview. There was a period when he relied on alcohol, but during a time spent in Mexico as the Vietnam conflict stretched on—eventually marked by escalating errors leading to further loss of innocent lives—he experienced a significant realization. Returning home, he then became involved with the anti-war movement, and it’s this transformation – seeing how someone who initially backed the war embarked on such an intensely personal path toward actively trying to stop it through outspoken protests – that stands out as the most surprising element within his frequently moving narrative. This is just another addition to a steadily expanding group of important firsthand narratives documenting the long-lasting and destructive effects of the Vietnam War.
