The film begins with a quick explanation of how hurricanes form, then jumps right into a pilot and his friend pilfering an airplane. However, the initial energy quickly dissipates as we meet the pilot, WWII veteran "Slattery" (Richard Widmark), who’s contentedly transporting goods across Florida – whatever they may be. As he flies directly into the storm depicted in the title, Slattery is triggered to recall the events that brought him to this point. The audience experiences these memories, which reveal how his actions affected others, specifically "Aggie" (Linda Darnell), "Dolores" (Veronica Lake), and his fellow soldiers headed by Gary Merrill’s predictably bland “Kramer.” While there's a noticeable amount of wind sound effects and the studio sprinklers were certainly used extensively, the story feels disjointed and bogged down with excessive dialogue and a rather weak romantic drama. I've always felt Linda Darnell’s performances are inconsistent, and in this case she doesn’t have enough to do as the narrative progresses predictably toward its conclusion. It’s something you could watch on a Saturday afternoon, typical B-movie fare, but it’s unlikely to stick with you for very long.
