It’s difficult to get behind Danny La Rue’s portrayal of the Shakespearean actor "Fred Wimbush," which ultimately leads the film down a path resembling a combination of "La Grande Vadrouille" and a "Carry On" movie—though not particularly amusingly so. The performers are providing entertainment for soldiers when they're captured by Nazis. Mistaking “Fred” for a woman, the Germans allow her to leave, and she then concentrates on saving her fellow soldiers and getting them to safety. There’s an abundance of clichés throughout; characters like Lance Percival’s "Smallpiece" and Alfred Marks’ "Gen Brincker," with their stereotypical stiff upper lip and lack of intelligence, don't really paint the enemy as a serious threat. While it is intended to be funny, the humor repeats itself, and the direction feels reminiscent of a Norman Wisdom film—but without any of the enjoyment. Despite this, it avoids being cheap or vulgar; La Rue treats his role with professionalism, and if he’d received a more sophisticated script, it might have been more enjoyable. It's perhaps not reasonable to critique something fifty years after its release, as tastes change, and it now feels quite dated compared to contemporary productions, but I still had trouble connecting with the premise. See for yourself and decide.
