Porter Hall receives considerable attention for his acting in this film. He portrays "Bill," who along with his wife, “Janet” (Katharine Alexander), and daughter, “Corliss” (Shirley Temple), resides next door to the "Pringle" family. The Pringles’ daughters engage in minor adolescent pranks, which lead to a disagreement between the two sets of parents. Simultaneously, the somewhat older “Mildred Pringle” (Virginia Welles) develops feelings for a soldier, becomes pregnant, and runs away with him. She asks her close friend "Corliss" to keep this a secret, but the parents misinterpret the situation, believing that it’s actually "Corliss" who has been involved with awkward young man “Dexter” (Jerome Courtland), and that she is the mother of the baby. The resulting uproar creates chaos, during which Hall's performance shines—his portrayal of a father struggling with frustration provides several genuinely amusing moments of parental worry. Courtland also delivers a commendable performance as the naive young man who has feelings for “Corliss” and readily takes advantage of the escalating misunderstanding. It veers toward farce at times, perhaps too much for my taste, due to the abundance of unlikely events, and the character of "Corliss" comes across as rather unpleasant in her selfishness and manipulative behavior. Nevertheless, the film moves along briskly, and it’s perfectly acceptable as ninety minutes of lighthearted wartime comedy that serves its purpose well enough.
