Kathirvelan comes across as an ordinary young man who enjoys a close relationship with his family. He’s devoted to Hanuman and uninterested in romantic pursuits. A trip to Coimbatore arises when his sister needs help after running off to marry someone, and it is there he meets Pavithra, the girl living nearby his brother-in-law's residence. Predictably, he develops feelings for her, and with assistance from his friend Mayilvaganan, attempts to win her over. However, she believes she’s in love with Gautham, a somewhat unreliable acquaintance. Adding another layer, there’s an existing feud between Pavithra’s father and Kathir's brother-in-law. To complicate things further, Kathir’s own father, having previously been hurt by his daughter’s actions, wants his son to remain loyal. If Udhayanidhi Nair intended to play it safe with his first film, Oru Kal Oru Kannadi, he sticks to that approach here, so your reaction is likely unremarkable. He portrays a carefree character who isn't afraid to pursue the woman he likes (though some might describe it as obsessive), yet still wishes her happiness even after rejection. The story feels familiar and director Prabhakaran, previously known for Sundarapandian, loosely connects scenes that are sporadically humorous, primarily thanks to Santhanam’s jokes, and emotionally manipulative enough to appeal to family audiences. The movie isn't inherently flawed but lacks any real ambition and is only mildly engaging. Conflicts resolve quickly, often in a convenient way, so nothing feels like a significant challenge. Gautham is simply interested in having a relationship with Pavithra, and she’s reciprocated his feelings, but this storyline resolves itself when Kathir overhears Gautham's intentions and alerts Pavithra. The longstanding disagreement between Kathir's brother-in-law and Pavithra’s father, which could have interfered with their romance, is resolved in a humorous fashion using a mimicry performance! Even the final hurdle—convincing Kathir’s dad—is overcome with some overly sentimental dialogue. At one point, Santhanam jokes about how many flashbacks he'll be forced to endure, as if the director acknowledges these issues and reassures viewers that entertainment is all that matters.
