It doesn’t come across as particularly harsh; instead, it creates a sense of unease. Following the Civil War, Ben Pride (played by Barry Sullivan), a widower, relocates to Kansas with his family. Upon their arrival in Lawrence, they encounter hostility from Confederate raiders under the command of Jud Barker (George C. Scott). Simultaneously, Ben finds himself developing feelings for Elizabeth Reynolds (Kathryn Hays), who is the daughter of the town physician. The film’s origins lie in a 1960s television series, The Road West, and it feels like episodes were combined to create this version. There are some inconsistencies—like the significant age difference between Sullivan and Hays during their romantic scenes, and the limited development given to Scott's multifaceted character—but the acting is solid, and it incorporates familiar elements that Western enthusiasts will appreciate.
