Sam (played by Patrick Swayze) and Molly (Demi Moore) aren't exactly skilled potters, but they certainly know how to create chaos! A night out at the theater to see a production of Macbeth takes a dark turn when Sam is unexpectedly attacked while walking down the street. Molly is understandably heartbroken, but his coworker Carl (Tony Goldwyn) steps in to offer support. Unbeknownst to her, Sam finds himself trapped between worlds, unable to pass on and forced to observe her daily life. He soon realizes that an old friend seems interested in Molly, and then becomes suspicious that his death might not have been as accidental as it appeared. The challenge is how he can communicate with her, warn her about potential danger. That’s where Oda Mae (Whoopi Goldberg) enters the picture. She's a medium who routinely comforts grieving widows by claiming their deceased husbands still hold affection for them. However, she finds herself in an unexpected situation when attempting to convince Molly that she is genuinely connected to Sam and that he fears for her safety as well, suspecting a sinister scheme. The Righteous Brothers also deserve credit, as their rendition of "Unchained Melody" beautifully establishes the atmosphere for this romantic mystery, which blends lighthearted moments with a sense of underlying threat, showcasing Goldberg at her best. While the storyline itself isn't perhaps the most robust, the film is an engaging two hours that avoids excessive sentimentality and physical comedy, allowing a nod to the spirit of "Madame Arcati" to be successfully transported into the 1990s. Nuns even make an appearance!
