This high-quality drama and thriller deals with themes of what happens after death. The story centers on a man who realizes he’s become a ghost, portrayed by Patrick Swayze, and his determination to uncover the identity of his murderer while also looking out for his ex-girlfriend, played by Demi Moore. Tony Goldwyn appears as his business associate, and Whoopi Goldberg is featured as a psychic spiritual guide. As with many exceptional films, “Ghost” (1990) requires roughly 15 to 20 minutes to introduce the characters before it really gets going, holding your attention until its conclusion. It blends dramatic elements, suspense, and humor in an intriguing look at the afterlife, sharing similarities with later movies such as “City of Angels” (1998), “Meet Joe Black” (1998), and “The Sixth Sense” (1999). Although the film’s religious concepts aren't particularly complex—they don’t go much deeper than a Jack T. Chick publication—it manages to communicate its significant notions in a way that is accessible to a broad audience, even if I don’t subscribe to every detail presented. The movie has a runtime of 2 hours and 6 minutes and was filmed on location in New York City (including Manhattan and Brooklyn), at Paramount Studios, and in downtown Los Angeles. GRADE: A/A-
