Someone unfamiliar with Americanized martial arts films featuring Jackie Chan or Jet Li will likely find Spirited Killer jarring. The film is rough around the edges—the dubbing is substandard, it’s filled with blood and gore, and its age shows through poor preservation. Despite these flaws, it delivers truly exceptional action sequences and remarkably authentic fight scenes involving performers largely unknown to mainstream Hollywood audiences. Featuring early roles for Panna Rittikrai and Tony Jaa, this movie should definitely appeal to martial arts enthusiasts; if you’re not familiar with those two actors, then you probably aren't a serious fan of the genre. The plot summaries found on most websites fail to capture what the film is really like. Imagine combining elements of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Fast Times at Ridgemont High—specifically Jeff Spicoli and his friends—and Friday the 13th. Mix those ingredients together and serve them cold. Regardless of how you feel about that combination, it’s effective whether you want a quick thrill or something to enjoy for longer. The dialogue and even the storyline take a backseat to the nearly constant action unfolding on screen. It's superb, as long as you aren’t easily disturbed, and holds up against modern martial arts choreography despite lacking digital effects. This film can be hard to track down; it was released as part of a series, but it deserves a place among your essential acquisitions. If you happen to find the DVD, grab it without hesitation and get some popcorn ready for watching with your family.
