Dalias Idok is a 1984 Hungarian animated film created by József Gémes, centered on themes of chivalry. Animations from Hungary often stand apart from those produced elsewhere, showcasing distinct perspectives and subject matter—a characteristic evident in earlier works like "Habfürdö'" from 1980. This animation similarly possesses a unique visual style, employing graphics that evoke the appearance of oil paintings. It's based on the Toldi trilogy, a three-part epic poem written by János Arany (1817 – 1882) in 1800. The story draws inspiration from the legendary Miklós Toldi, who fought in King Louis the Great’s army during the 13th century; the trilogy details his adventures as a royal champion. Miklós Toldi (c. 1320 – November 22, 1390) was a Hungarian nobleman from Bihar County within the Kingdom of Hungary and is now considered a legendary figure in Hungarian folklore, initially believed to be purely mythical but later confirmed to have been a historical person. The film incorporates all the expected elements of a traditional chivalry narrative: displays of heroism, tragic events, lost romances, battles, and an unhappy conclusion. I viewed a restored version derived from original negative and magnetic tapes; this enhanced presentation in 4K was produced in Hungary in 2022 for the National Film Institute - Film Archive and Lab. My rating is 8.5 out of 10 / A-.
