CinemaSerf on Angel and Big Joe

6/10 · Nov 30, 2025

Paul Servino portrays “Joe,” a gentle telephone engineer who's repeatedly asked by a boy called "Angel" (Dadi Pinero) to fix a public phone close to where Joe lives with his family; he’s waiting for a call from his father, who isn’t around. He agrees to help, but when the call doesn’t arrive quickly, Angel finds work cleaning car windows and runs into “Joe” once more. This time, the older man asks Angel to assist him in constructing a greenhouse so that he can grow roses to sell. As the film continues, it's not just the flowers that flourish; after their initial sale, Joe proposes that Angel come live with him and they expand the venture. Since Angel’s own family is moving, his future becomes uncertain. The connection between these two characters highlights how often people simply need a sense of direction to feel fulfilled. Angel also longs for a father figure, and Servino's portrayal of an easygoing man from a similar working-class background gives the story a grounded quality while hinting that anything can be achieved with effort. The production values are unremarkable, but the underlying message makes the ten minutes worthwhile.
