The film begins with a creature appearing on what resembles a tennis ball, and we observe its life unfolding amidst other beings seemingly in search of food. Its existence is fraught with peril; children frequently cause unintentional harm as they play, while predators pose an ever-present threat. As the caterpillar eats and develops, it enters a recurring pattern meant to prepare it for a transformation into something lovely. The photography, which focuses closely on the subject, is inventive and doesn't shy away from depicting the harsh realities of insect life—particularly encounters with creatures like mantises—where survival isn’t guaranteed. Time-lapse sequences create moments where you find yourself rooting for the creature as it hangs by a thread, anticipating the emergence of a Monarch butterfly's recognizable form. There is no commentary track; instead, natural sounds enhance the straightforward visuals documenting the arrival of this remarkably intricate, vibrant, and small insect. A touch of Chopin later in the film complements the ongoing struggle to evade natural hazards, those who seek butterflies, and the increasingly artificial and harmful conditions of city life that threaten its survival.
