There's something immediately striking about this film—it begins with two VISTA volunteers arriving to split firewood in matching sweater sets and high heels. That opening moment pretty much establishes the tone for what becomes a rather condescending portrayal of how disadvantaged communities can be aided through kindness and basic instruction, like cooking classes. The irony isn’t lost on the viewer as these volunteers travel to assist a Navajo community that had thrived until white settlers arrived, forcing them onto reservations where they gradually lost their traditional skills and independence. Now, a young college graduate is there to teach them how to cook and insists they learn English. A group of African American children are also receiving VISTA support, but this feels particularly troubling when you consider some of the kids—or perhaps their mothers—don’t even know their own ages or who their parents are, which prevents them from accessing standard services such as education! It's tempting to dismiss documentaries like this one. The production values aren’t great, Paul Newman’s narration can come across as overly patronizing, and there’s a subtly unpleasant sense of superiority throughout the film's perspective. Fortunately, the woman who couldn't manage to chop wood at the beginning transforms into something akin to “Woody Woodpecker” with an axe by the end, so at least no one will be left out in the cold.
