It’s an unusual documentary, made by BP, that chronicles one morning in the life of the girl featured, who's feeling restless and spends her time observing the people visiting her father’s gas station because he refuses to take her to a local fair! He attempts to persuade her about how enjoyable it is to stay where they are – but she remains doubtful, as did I for the initial few minutes. Then an oil tanker arrives, though its driver only lingers briefly to refill his coffee. There's birdsong and a cyclist, a pair of clergymen on Vespas, then a fancy luxury car pulls up. Her dad can’t locate the petrol cap, but at least she gets her photograph taken (around two thousand times!) and he receives a large cigar. Following that, some unfortunate newlyweds show up, dressed formally, covered in oil and perspiration, with a flat tire on their small vehicle – her father repairs it while she replaces the bride's missing corsage. Seems like a fun day, right? But there’s even more to come as one of those Morris Travellers—you know, the ones with wooden frames—experiences engine trouble, so its British owners must stop and enjoy polite afternoon tea while awaiting a replacement spark plug. They don’t invite her to join them though; they're rather unfriendly... Later, a stylish Mercedes convertible arrives, and its passenger, who plays guitar, gives her an opportunity for a brief dance before lunch. The problem is that apart from those fleeting moments of activity, the film is as tedious to watch as it probably is to experience, and the tempo lacks energy. It’s hard to say who BP intended this for, but there's something appealing about seeing the quiet existence of a rural area where roads were once shared by donkeys and carts, bicycles, and those classic-looking cars with small engines.
