I found myself noticing that the buildings being torn down seemed to have more personality than the modern structures going up in their place. This brief documentary gives a look at a construction team and shows what’s involved in building New York's Tishman Building on 5th Avenue, from the initial planning stages to completion. We follow the process through the work of surveyors, architects, and draftsmen, as well as the excavation and occasionally dangerous construction itself, watching it appear as if by magic. It holds your attention fairly well, though the director seems fond of using a lot of sentimental music and something resembling early rap before settling on natural sounds and footage of the site being cleared and the building taking shape. A surprising detail is that they transport the rubble to New Jersey to help fill in the marshland there. Technology and physical effort go hand-in-hand, and fortunately, most of this lengthy process is squeezed into a 20-minute film with energetic narration from those doing the work, both inside and out. I still feel uneasy watching people walk along steel beams high above the ground. It’s not something for everyone! It was interesting to learn that 20% of the budget went toward installing the air conditioning, or that it took as much time to fit everything in as it did to build the basic structure.
