It's difficult to understand the reasoning behind attempting to squeeze centuries of American colonization into a short film—it seems an odd concept. However, borrowing elements from other films and incorporating an energetic musical score, the production does make an effort. The story begins with weary British settlers who then choose to reject their traditions and form their own government. Ignoring the concerns of those already living there, these newcomers expand their beliefs across a wide area, which functions reasonably well until the Confederacy rejects Lincoln’s ideas about fairness, creating divisions. Following considerable violence, the narrative moves on to an assassinated Austrian royal triggering further conflict, then to Pearl Harbor and Korea—the pattern becomes clear. As historical overviews go, this one is rather impersonal and focused on military matters, neglecting the complexities of politics or individual character. The film’s intent seems geared toward promoting patriotism and presenting a deliberately limited perspective on events, which could explain why it might still be viewed in Washington D.C., particularly given present-day American views on policies like the “Monroe Doctrine.”
