John Derek plays David, who comes home late one evening to find his parents about to learn of his best friend’s death following what seems like a fight fueled by alcohol. David’s lawyer father, Howard (Lee J. Cobb), immediately suspects something isn't right, and the audience is quickly made privy to exactly what transpired—and how family bonds will soon be put under pressure. Things become more complicated when an illegal bookie, already on the police’s radar, is accused of murder, and his wife asks Cobb for help in preventing his execution. Up until that point, everything was straightforward and well-organized, but unfortunately, the story then veers into some rather absurd directions as David, his girlfriend Lee (Jody Lawrence), and a series of convenient coincidences take over, causing it to fall apart. It might have been more successful if it had simply remained focused on the family dynamic—but Henry Levin didn't seem to have enough material to sustain this for even ninety minutes, ultimately leading to a disheartening conclusion. Cobb appears rather detached from the proceedings, and I must admit I shared his lack of enthusiasm.
